This paper critically and comparatively examines the cases of the American Cosa Nostra, a branch of the earlier Sicilian mafia, and the Italian mafia. It will discuss their similarities, but more importantly the differences, especially the notion that the mafia should be reinterpreted as less organized crime groups on the basis of evidence in the last 15 years of their persistent struggle and gradual decline.
